June Running Review
Hmmm... My running did not go at all close to how I wanted and needed it to. In many ways I feel like I let myself down, but I'm trying not to be too hard on myself. I'm trying to remind myself that any running I do is better than nothing at all. Plus I think I'm past the point where I'm going to be reaching milestones every other week... "oh look, I ran 10 minutes without stopping" "Wow! I made it 6 miles today" "Yay, I managed to decrease my pace by a full minute" Because at this point I am where I am, and it's going to take time to improve. It's totally anticlimatic, but I guess I shouldn't expect to go from non-runner to super-runner in like 3 months. I mean, really. So here are my June stats:
Overall mileage: about 47 miles... not enough for someone who thought they were training for a 20k. I should have been closer to 60.
Races: no June races for me, but I am doing one on Thursday
Paces: My 2-4 miles runs are approaching an overall 11:15 pace, which is great considering I used to do a 12:30 pace. (I AM SLOW, no shame in that). My longer runs are still around a 12:30. I actually think this speeding up is why my long runs haven't been successful. I think I'm just trying to run too fast and I can't maintain it for that long yet. But when I slow down it just feels too slow. Anyway
Treadmill Runs: Best pace for longer runs: 5.5-5.7 Speed Intervals now done in 2 minute shifts between 6.7 and 7.2 for the fast part (4.5 for the recovery). Was able to run a 9:50 mile on a few occasions
Distance: A real struggle this month. I feel good going up to 5 miles. My 2.5 mile midweek runs are super easy and I can really push myself through nearly the whole run. But the long runs are hurting me... my knee and hip specifically. So I'm really really scaling back. My new plan is to run 3 miles, 3 time during the week and to rebuild up to 6 miles on my Sunday run. That puts me at 15 miles a week, which is respectable.
Cross Training: Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.... yeah I need to do this again.
So going forward into July: I'm really trying to be consistent about running 4 times a week. I feel like this is the hardest thing. There is always so much going on that I feel like I can barely squeeze in 3 runs. But no more excuses, I just have to do it. Also I want to continue to try and get my mile down to 9 minutes. Otherwise I'm letting myself off the hook for goals. In fact I haven't even been timing my outside runs (or using my iPod), just so that I can run however I want to run without any pressure of meeting a distance or time goal.
Hopefully I'll feel more optimistic and satisified when I write up my July review.
